Comp News – There are over 250,000 jobs posted on Tennessee’s job board, a fact which many of the state’s Republicans have used as evidence for the need to eliminate social unemployment programs within the state.

There’s just one catch – less than 3% of those advertised jobs pay above $20,000 a year. The federal poverty line for a family of three is just short of $22,000.

Federally-funded pandemic unemployment benefits in Tennessee will expire on July 3, a move which Gov. Bill Lee says is aimed to get Tennesseeans back to work.

With so few jobs offering living wages, that may be a difficult prospect.

Senator Heidi Campbell (D-District 20) said she’s worried about Tennessee losing the federal CARES Act funds currently paying for some unemployment benefits. Governor Lee elected to stop accepting those in July, saying he didn’t want to pay people to sit at home.

“I think for the most part Tennesseans aren’t lazy and, I think it’s kind of insulting to continuously imply that they are,” Campbell said.

The governor’s office recently released this statement.

Jobs4TN has job postings for every skill level, in every part of the state. We are focused on helping Tennesseans find meaningful employment.
