It’s not every day you read a story about someone being sued for allocating extra bonus pay, but that’s exactly what’s happening down in the Pelican State.

The Caddo Parish School Board approved a one-time bonus allocation of $1,000 for teachers who were present for 90% of their workdays. However, Red River United, a local of the American Federation of Teachers, has filed suit claiming that the attendance requirement discriminates against women, older employees, and disabled people.

Some teachers, such as those who took maternity leave and are thus disqualified for missing more than 10% of their scheduled days, have voiced their discontent.

“This year has been grueling and every employee who has shown up for our students is a hero. That doesn’t change just because someone had to take time off to have a baby, or went in for emergency surgery,” union president Jackie Lansdale said, according to KSLA-TV.
