COMP NEWS – Teachers in Horry County in South Carolina will receive an extra holiday bonus this year of up to $1,000.
The Horry County Board of Education voted Monday night to give all school district employees a holiday bonus.
The board was presented four options for bonuses and chose the one that will give employees the biggest “take home” check.
Each full-time employee will receive an actual check for $1,000. Part-time and positive employees will receive a check for $500. (Positive employees such as after school care workers are employed for less than 20 hours a week.)
The bonuses come from extra funds available to the county, according to a district superintendent.
Board vice chairman Neil James made a motion to go with the option of bonuses of $1,500 for full-time employees and $750 for part-time employees. However, the net pay would have been $967 and $478. The total cost for that option would have been $9.8 million to the district. The motion failed for lack of a second.
District superintendent Dr. Rick Maxey said the district had received extra funds to the unassigned portion of the fund balance this year. The money for the bonuses would come from that pot of money.
District chief financial officer John Gardner said it has been since 2021 that employees received a holiday bonus. He said the district will work to get the bonus checks out before the Thanksgiving holidays.
