Comp News – A new Connecticut law will require employers to list the range of compensation offered for a job position during an interview process for that position. Companies will also be legally compelled to share the offered wage range of a job position to an employee that already holds that position.

Connecticut Public Act 21-30 defines “wage range” as “the range of wages an employer anticipates relying on when setting wages for a position, and may include reference to any applicable pay scale, previously determined range of wages for the position, actual range of wages for those employees currently holding comparable positions or the employer’s budgeted amount for the position.”

The new law will allow more transparency regarding compensation for people seeking employment. However, the new law does not require companies to make compensation for existing employees published openly.

Nothing in the new law requires an employer to “disclose the amount of wages paid to any employee.” In other words, the law is not a vehicle for one employee to find out what another employee makes.

The law will take place on October 1st. It is likely that companies will begin adopting this new requirement even earlier than that.
